West of Ahar, Azarbaijan Sharghi Province, Iran, 2 x 6.1mb

The first earthquake above 6.0 magnitude in Azarbaijan Sharghi Province since 1883 [utsu, iisse]
At least 306 people killed and 2,000 injured in numerous villages in epicentral area. Four villages were destroyed and 60 were heavily damaged. Structural damage to some buildings at Tabriz and power and phone lines were disrupted. Felt (III) at Yerevan, Armenia. Also felt at Kapan. Felt (II) at Tbilisi, Georgia and at Van, Turkey. [usgs]
The first quake was felt in Tabriz, Iran (58 km SW) Rasht, Iran (274k m SE), Qazvin, Iran (370 km SE); Tbilisi (Georgia) (405 km NW) and Yerevan, Armenia 279 km NW [emsc]
The second quake was felt in Tabriz, Iran (58 km SW) and Salmās (Iran) (176 km W) [emsc]

Global CMT Project Moment Tensor Solution have 6.5Mw and 6.4Ms for the first quake and 6.3Mw and 6.3Ms for the second.
USGS have the following readings for the first quake, number of stations used in brackets,
mb = 6.2 (385), ML = 6.1 ( 6), Ms = 6.7 (440)
and
mb = 6.3 (213), ML = 6.0 ( 6) for the second quake.

Aftershocks

The map below shows the location of the two 6.1 mb main quakes and the series of 144 aftershocks for the first 72 hours as estimated by the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology, Iran (IIEES)

* The grid like pattern is due to the co-ordinates provided by IIEES only having two decimal points.
* This is a revised map, the data was faulty due to incorrect conversion of the local time to UTC by IISEE.

The next map shows the earthquake history of the area, based on a search by location “Azarbaijan Sharghi Province” within the IIEES database, with 152 results back to 1907, and a search using the same parameters of Dr. Tokuji Utsu’s “Catalog of Damaging Earthquakes in the World, 3000BC to 2009” catalog, with 17 results above magnitude 6.0.
The current events are included for reference and can be clearly seen west of Ahar.
