On Gokceada (Imbros Is) May 24, 2014 local time in the Aegean Sea at 09:25 a very severe earthquake with magnitude M = 6.5 occurred .
Focal depth of the earthquake 23.3 km . Felt throughout the Aegean Region including the Çanakkale , Balıkesir, Edirne and Istanbul and Marmara regions of Turkey. Istanbul and area 3-4MM intensity ( EMD- 98 scale) , Canakkale, Imbros and South Thrace 5MM intensity. Also felt in Bulgaria.
The earthquake was a strike-slip event on the North Anatolian Fault Zone in the Aegean Sea in a NE -SW direction.

Recent large events in the area include 08 January 2013 in the North Aegean Sea Bozcaada ML = 6.2, and on 30 July 2013 Kaleköy-Imbros in the Aegean Sea with M = 5.3
