2012 RAS 3+

Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GS RAS) was established on the basis of experimental and methodological Joint expedition of the Institute of Earth Physics. O. Schmidt RAS in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences № 107, dated May 31, 1994, pursuant to Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation № 444 of May 11, 1993.
Main activities include;

  • perform basic research and applied research into the problems of seismology and geophysics
  • conducting continuous seismic monitoring of the Russian Federation and adjacent areas of the world.
  • with Roshydromet Russian operates a tsunami warning system in the Far East;
  • together with the Defense Ministry (Government of the Russian Federation of 25 August 2005 № 537) operates the Russian objects (9 seismic stations through RAS) of the International Monitoring System, which is created for the continuous monitoring of the implementation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
  • monitoring of volcanic activity (for Kamchatka Branch GS RAS) and
  • Monitoring slow geodynamic processes in the Earth’s crust and surface deformation.
